The Fire Department says the blaze broke out on the 50th floor.

Officials said four firefighters suffered minor injuries. Very confined (well built building).

Donald Trump (seen in 2005 showing Trump World Tower) once battled an NYC bill that suggested requiring all residential buildings to install sprinklers.

Multiple reports have surfaced about the lack of sprinklers in Trump Tower's upper floors, confirmed by Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro.

Mr Trump's family has an apartment on the top floors of the 58-storey building but he has spent little time in NY since taking office. The victim was a resident on the floor.

Still, Trump said at the time that he would spend $3 million to outfit Trump World's 370 units with sprinklers because it would make tenants feel safer, according to a New York Times article from the era. The cause of the fire has not yet been discovered.

Requested if this assessment was true, Nigro claimed, "It's a well-built construction". He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and died shortly thereafter.

"We had many floors to search, and stairways, and right now the only civilian injury is to the occupant of that apartment".

Nigro said that despite a "considerable amount of smoke" spreading throughout the building, the structure had "stood up quite well".

The president maintains the building's top three floors as his residential home.

Multiple street closures slowed foot and auto traffic surrounding the tower, from East 55th Street to East 57th Street from Fifth Avenue to Madison Avenue, according to officials.

About 200 firefighters and emergency medical service workers responded to the fire, Nigro said. At the time the legislation was being talked about, Mr. Trump had actually simply begun building on a 72-story tower near the United Nations, and he consequently stated he would set up sprinklers there at an expense of $3 million.
