PS4 System Update 5.50 Features Supersampling, Parental Controls, and More

Sony has announced that PlayStation 4 gamers on the beta channel have a new software update to try out.

The new Play Time Management feature will let family managers and others set as guardians keep tabs on their child's playtime each day. Apart from setting this to check on their kid's playtime, the family manager/guardians can apply playtime restrictions to make sure that the child is only playing for a set amount of time or within set playable hours. The system is set up to notify your child during gameplay so that he/she knows when they should save and quit. Additionally, they have the option of automatically logging the child out of the PS4 once playtime ends.

The second tab, PS Plus, only lists games you've acquired through the monthly PlayStation Plus offerings. Two new tabs have also been added to the console's library, making it easier to see what specific apps that have been installed, and what ones have just been purchased. You can hide content like betas, trials, and demos. Finally, once software update 5.50 arrives, your Library's getting some properly powerful organization tools - perhaps even more potent than the Dewey Decimal System (don't tell Conan the Librarian I said that).

Elon Musk's 'Super Terrible Idea': a $500 Flamethrower
He wrote: "The rumor that I'm secretly creating a zombie apocalypse to generate demand for flamethrowers is completely false". Elon Musk is probably best known for his goal to get to Mars , but he has other aspirations, like building traffic tunnels .

Additional features include Quick Menu improvements that add shortcut buttons for media controls and access to individual friends, as well as customization options for team pages in Tournaments.

Supersampling Mode adds an option that can be toggled in Settings that allows owners of 1080p TVs, or lower, to get a sharper image in some games. If your PS Plus membership is expired, a PS Plus icon with a lock shows up next to your game so you know which games you can play if you re-subscribe. This lets those with HDTVs get a better visual experience when playing some PS4 games. This section also shows games that have been purchased, but not downloaded. The new firmware will introduce several changes and conveniences in the user interface plus a supersampling mode for PlayStation 4 Pro that accommodates those who don't have a TV supporting 4K resolution.

With the launch of 5.50, you'll be able to access custom friends' lists directly from the Quick Menu. Through it, you're also able to search for games you own but don't now have installed.

All of the new features are described in this PlayStation Blog post. "Please note performance will vary, as games are optimised differently to take advantage of the power of PS4 Pro".
