Pakistan police arrests Zainab Ansari's murderer


"He is a serial killer", Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced in a press conference at the CM Secretariat Lahore.

There has been no immediate comment either from the accused or his lawyers.

The breakthrough came in what officials are calling a serial murder case and which has stirred outrage across the country.

"We have arrested this horrific creature", Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif said at a press conference Tuesday.The alleged killer's first victim was found dead in Kasur two years ago. Since the day Zainab's body was found from a garbage dump in Kasur on January 9, search had been going on to find her killer. A report in Express Tribune added that Imran also faces charges of murdering eight other girls in Pakistan's Kasur, which is situated some 50-kms from Lahore.

On January 21, the Supreme Court gave three days' time to a joint investigation team formed to probe the rape and murder of Zainab to track down the culprit. Sitting alongside him was Zainab Ansari's father.

Malik Ahmed Khan, a spokesperson for the Punjab government, told a private news channel that the suspect had now been arrested from Pakpattan.

An autopsy revealed she had been raped and strangled to death. Report from PFSA confirmed that Imran's DNA sample matched with the traces that were collected from Zainab's body.

Additionally, according to reports, Imran had shaved his beard after the incident which helped him evade arrest till now as the CCTV footage showed a man sporting a beard.

A number of police officials have been transferred out of Punjab for failing to investigate complaints of missing children since 2015, when authorities uncovered what they said was a pedophile ring linked to a prominent local family.

According to police sources, the suspect arrested earlier in the day was a resident of the same area where Zainab's house was located, and lived very close to the victim's aunt's house.

Pakistan's senate has reportedly been asked to pass the bill to re-introduce public executions for anyone who rapes or kidnaps children under the age of 14.
