Heavy snowfall Thursday will bring white to Christmas

It does show highs in the 40s the two days at Christmas, and also flirts with the idea of winter precipitation somewhere across the area the 26th or the 27th.

Other major guidance models, including the normally reliable European model, are projecting a later return of colder air. Temperatures reached 61 degrees on the holiday in 2014, but did not rise above freezing in 2013, with a high of 32 degrees.

There had been some hopes in the United Kingdom of a little drift of the white stuff, given that the start of December has seen widespread sub-zero temperatures, and heavy snow in some northern areas, and even in London which has traditionally escaped any flurries.

"In what can only be described as typical British weather, the rise in temperature in the final run-up to the big day means the odds have now been slashed into just 3-1 from 10-1 that Christmas Day 2017 enters the record books as the warmest ever".

Stronger winds are then due to move south, hitting the United Kingdom from Boxing Day to New Year's Day with two further low pressure zones on their way. Snowfall is expected on December 23rd in West Iceland and on Christmas Eve in the north of the country.

Consequently the snow line will rise to over 1,000m, with heavy rain forecast below that level in many places on Friday night. The more likely scenario would be for another rain event or perhaps a widespread ice storm. Much colder air will spill across the Ohio Valley shifting our pattern to a much colder one.
