Veterans honored at downtown Denver parade

The city of Cleveland honored those in the armed forces with the 4th annual Veterans Day parade. Speakers will include Ernest Shorey, Andrews Post 17, American Legion; Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling; and the Rev. William Doughty.

Communities across the South Shore will be holding events this weekend in observance of Veterans Day.

As part of creating the veterans park, the city moved the Vietnam Memorial on Columbia Street and the Spanish-American War Memorial in Canal Square Park to the site.

According to history.com, Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. The route begins at Parkersburg High School and ends at City Park.

Beginning at 8:30 a.m. Hingham Town Hall will be hosting a breakfast for military personell and their families, followed by a ceremony at 11 a.m. and a wreath laying. The Boy Scouts will also be holding a flag retirement ceremony at 2 at the Whipple Senior Center.

Lauren Daniels is in that class; and Veterans Day holds a special meaning for her. Lauren's parents and grandparents are veterans. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m.in the cemetery's gazebo. The parade starts at 10 a.m. and will be led by retired Navy Rear Adm. William Copeland Jr.
