Remembering a legend: Five iconic IV Sasi movies that shaped Mollywood


Legendary Indian director I.V. Sasi passed away in Chennai on Tuesday. It was to become an art director that he boarded a train to Chennai in 1968. His first directorial venture was "Ulsavam" which released in the year 1975.

Though he stayed away from what he loved the most after his movie Vellathooval in 2009, Sasi was preparing for his dream project in the meantime.

He also helmed several critically acclaimed films like Alkoottathil Thaniye, Kanamarayathu, Aksharangal andVadakaykkoru Hrudayam.

IV Sasi had worked with Mammotty in films like Thrishna and Mrugaya which were phenomenal hits and established Mammokka's stardom. He is known for films like Devasuram, Mrigaya, Adiyozhukkukal among others. Filmmaker M Padmakumar, who had assisted Sasi in abound 18 films said, "It is similar to taming an elephant that had turned violent with a mere glance". The MD of Aries Group said he discussed about the film with Sasi even two days before the latter's death. He directed Rajesh Khanna in Anokha Rishta in 1986.

IV Sasi was known primarily for his Malayalam films which were popular at the box office. In fact, Mammootty has done some of his finest work in Sasi's films. Have worked with this dynamic director. He was one of the filmmakers, who understood the aesthetics of revolution.

In 2006, after overcoming a lot of obstacles, Sasi made an ambitious comeback with the Mammootty-Katrina Kaif-starrer Balram vs Taradas, where the mega star played both the title characters he played in earlier blockbusters made by Sasi. His first film was a huge success but his name reportedly wasn't mentioned in his credits. It was in this room that Sasi always stayed when he directed his films in this city.

IV Sasi has the distinction of directing Kamal Haasan in a Hindi film as well, apart from working with him in three Malayalam movies.
