One person is missing and seven people have been injured after the shocking blast, which occurred around 7.20pm on the water northwest of the Treasure Chest Casino in Kenner, Louisiana.

U.S. Coast Guard crews hoped to get a helicopter into the air as dawn broke Monday in their ongoing search for a man missing after an oil and gas platform explosion on a lake near New Orleans.

The Clovelly Oil Co. platform exploded Sunday night while maintenance was being done on the structure, sending a fireball high into the night sky, authorities and company officials said.

McGregor said there were "a lot of injuries" with at least six confirmed and more expected.

Officials said one person was believed to be unaccounted for. "We are treating it as a search and rescue", Lopinto said.

Three of seven workers injured in the explosion remain in critical condition, officials said - two with severe burns.

But arson investigators will determine the cause of the explosion after the fire has burned out, reports WWL. The platform, in an unincorporated area of Jefferson Parish, "does service both oil and natural gas", according to authorities.

And while the fire department in Jefferson Parish attempted to contain the damage, authorities acknowledged oil could now be leaking into the lake.
