Mother dies trying to save her daughter while escaping from Hurricane Harvey

The identities of the mother and child were being withheld until the father, who was out of town, can be notified.

Showing signs of hypothermia, the child was treated in a local hospital where she is in stable condition.

The hurricane has since weakened to a tropical storm.

A mother in Texas has died as she tried to get herself and her daughter to safety in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

Two police officers and fire rescue officers used a rubber boat to reach the pair and managed to drag them onto the boat. Rescuers pulled them into the boat just before they would have gone under a railroad trestle where the water was so high that the boat could not have followed.

A trembling toddler, clinging to the body of her drowned mother, has been rescued from a rain-swollen canal in the City of Beaumont in Southeast Texas, authorities reported today.

According to police, a member of the public assisted in transporting the mother and daughter with his truck to an ambulance, however, the woman was declared dead.

Beaumont officers and firefighters rushed to rescue a woman and her young daughter who were swept away in a canal, but only the girl survived.

Police spokeswoman Carol Riley told People that the mother "absolutely saved the child's life".

The child was holding onto the floating woman when a police and fire-rescue team in a boat caught up to them a half-mile downstream, he said.

First responders attempted CPR on the woman until they were able to get her and her child to the ambulance, but she later died.

"They were in the water for quite some time", she said.

The New York Times reported Wednesday that the death toll from the storm had risen to 30 confirmed and suspected flood-related deaths.
