Three shot dead in court escape bid

Russia's Investigative Committee said the attempted getaway started while the five handcuffed men were being escorted by two guards in an elevator at the Moscow Regional Court where they were standing trial.

Five of the accused "attacked police officers (escorting them) and tried to seize their weapons", while in an elevator, police said.

Lawyer Sofia Russkaya told TASS news agency: "We were at a different session when heard shots fired".

Three gang member suspects have been killed during an escape attempt in a court in Moscow, Russia.

The members of the GTA Gang are charged with the murders of auto drivers in the Moscow and neighboring Kaluga regions in 2012 and 2014.

According to a statement that was issued by the National Guard after the shooting, none of the "civilians" present at the courthouse was hurt "thanks to the courageous and professional actions of the National Guard officers". Osipova said the ambush led to a shootout between the courthouse's security guards and gang suspects.The other suspects were in another room when the incident happened at the Moscow Regional courthouse. They are in serious conditions. "And the weapons, they captured", she said, speaking with difficulty.

The trio were killed during a shootout which also left two guards injured.

Nine suspected members of the gang have been on trial since last summer, and prosecutors have asked for life sentences. One of the employees of Rosgvardia Mikhail Ananichev was wounded by bandits in the shoulder.

The investigation into the gang charged a total of nine defendants, all of whom originated from ex-Soviet Central Asian states, with murder, "banditry", robbery and arms trafficking.
