Kam Chancellor's new deal shows Seahawks' secondary is a primary consideration

Less than 24 hours after he took to the podium to discuss his ongoing contract negotiations, strong safety Kam Chancellor has agreed to an extension with the Seattle Seahawks.

Chancellor and coach Pete Carroll had both expressed optimism in the first two days of camp that a contract extension could be on the horizon for the hard-hitting strong safety who has played through numerous injuries and is recognized as a core piece of the Seahawks defense. Almost one year ago, Chancellor reflected on the lessons he learned from the holdout. While the $12 million average per year places him behind Eric Berry and Tyrann Mathieu, the percentage of guaranteed money in the deal is incredibly high - something players often value far more than inflated details.

Two years ago, Kam Chancellor staged a holdout about nothing. The signing of Chancellor helps Seattle ensure that the "Legion of Boom" will remain in place for years to come. Sources told ESPN and NFL Network that Chancellor's new pact is for $36 million and runs through 2020. "Hopefully it'll get done any time now". "I'm a positive guy, so I'd rather just keep it on the positive end on both sides".

"I love this team, " Chancellor said.

His extension will make that a very real possibility, something that may have been hard to imagine two years ago - nearly to the day - when Chancellor began what would become a protracted and bitter holdout that lasted two games into the regular season.

"I love this team". I can't really put a time frame on how long I want to play. "They gave me my first opportunity, the only opportunity".
