President Donald Trump, in a furious Friday morning message, said he is being investigated for his role in firing former FBI Director James Comey and seemed to accuse the deputy attorney general of overseeing a "witch hunt" against him. "The tweet from the president was a response to the five anonymous sources that were purportedly leaking information to The Washington Post about a potential investigation of the president". The source spoke on condition of anonymity.
On Wednesday, The Washington Post reported that Trump was under investigation for obstruction of justice, citing unnamed officials.
The Democratic National Committee called on Rosenstein to recuse himself from the Russian Federation matter, but it said authority over the investigation should be given to Mueller and not another Trump appointee.
"If the president thinks he can fire Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein and replace him with someone who will shut down the investigation, he's in for a rude awakening", Dianne Feinstein of California, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Friday. According to the Post, both Comey and Daniel Coats, director of national Intelligence, have said Trump sought their help in hopes the FBI would drop the investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
If Mueller is investigating Trump's firing of Comey as possible obstruction of justice, he might want to learn about Trump's interactions with Rosenstein, the Justice Department official who wrote the memo criticizing Comey's performance before his firing.
Trump was set to escape the Washington pressure cooker on Saturday.
Mr Pence's office confirmed he had retained Richard Cullen, a former Virginia attorney general and USA attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, to assist "in responding to inquiries" from Mr Mueller.
