San Diego 8th-grader spells 'Polynesian' to advance in National Spelling Bee

She is among the youngest spellers at the national bee in Washington, D.C. She has lots of favorite foods, but she especially loves banana split blizzards from Dairy Queen.

So far, the first two Minnesotans to be thrown a word in the preliminary round have spelled correctly during the national telecast on ESPN3.

Zheng said his most hard question was a multiple-choice question about the word "gaufrette" - a slice of potato cut to look like a waffle and then fried.

The only Wisconsin student to win the national title, Joanne Lagatta, then of Clintonville, took the top spot in 1991. They lamented their misses and gossiped about what score might be "the cutoff" for making the top 50.

Propper will find out after 6 p.m. today if her flawless score in the oral rounds, combined with her score in a written spelling and vocabulary test, will be enough to advance to Thursday's final rounds. Oral spelling begins this morning at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, and wraps up Thursday night.

To pick her dream team of spellers, Twyman, a 25-year-old college student, studied how the children performed in previous bees and if they have siblings who competed.
