Almost 200 people have been arrested by federal agents in southern California as part of a five-day operation targeting immigrants convicted of crimes or in the country illegally, officials said yesterday.

Dozens of convicted sex criminals and drug offenders were among the immigrants caught in the Los Angeles area as part of ICE's five-day operation that ended on Wednesday.

"We want to know just how widespread the abuse is", said Carl Takei, an attorney with the ACLU's National Prison Project who works on immigration detention issues.

Some of the individuals had serious prior convictions, including a convicted rapist and a previously deported cocaine trafficker.

Those convictions included: three driving-under-the-influence arrests; re-entry after deportation; trespassing; drug trafficking; providing false identification; illegal entry; and escape. "By taking these individuals off the streets and removing them from the country, we're making our communities safer for everyone", Los Angeles ICE Field Director David Marin said in a statement.

"During targeted enforcement operations ICE officers frequently encounter additional suspects who may be in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws". He later returned to the country illegally, ICE said.

Kelly's phrasing aside, his figures square with the latest numbers out from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The majority of those arrested in the fresh round of raids were male immigrants from Mexico.

That crime is a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. The crackdown took place in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

President Donald Trump did sign an executive order earlier this year calling for expedited deportation and 5,000 more federal immigration agents, but fulfilling that order at this point is overly ambitious, Walters said.

The agency said the number reflects an increase of 37.6 percent over the same period in 2016.

According to ICE, more arrests were made in Dallas (4,969) than any other city, followed by Atlanta (4,246) and Houston (4,040).

In Southern California, however, arrests have remained relative flat, according to the Los Angeles Times.
