But while Trump and Francis may be in brief agreement, Trump's prior anti-Muslim rhetoric " including his musing that Islam "hates" the West " is the antithesis of what the pope has been preaching about a need for dialogue with Muslims.
They are stylistic opposites, one a bombastic tycoon-turned-president, the other a famously modest pope. "I think he does to every world leader".
Trump and Pope Francis clashed previous year during the presidential campaign, when the latter said, without naming Trump specifically, that it wasn't Christian to build walls.
Before parting ways, Trump thanked Francis and said, "I won't forget what you said".
Trump responded: "We can use peace".
The two exchanged gifts, with Trump presenting the Pope with a series of books by Martin Luther King Jr., an engraved stone from the King memorial and a lotus sculpture. "I hope you do", Trump said. The pontiff said last week he would "never make a judgment about a person without hearing him out" and some Vatican observers suspect he will hold his tongue, at least for now. He spent the night at the US ambassador to Italy's residence and will make the drive to the Vatican early Wednesday morning.

At least not until the Shadow Brokers released screenshots of the Equation Group's stolen "2013 Windows Ops Disk". To tease bidders, the group dumped a collection of files containing mostly firewall exploits.
"We had a fantastic meeting", the president said afterward.
Trump, meeting the pontiff for the first time, said he had "renewed" the USA "commitment to fighting global famine", with the United Nations warning that about 20 million people across Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen are at risk.
The pope's approach, he said, is "to meet the major players in the field in order to reason together and to propose to everyone the greatest good, exercising the soft power that seems to me to be the specific trait of his worldwide policy". Those words echoed what Francis said in a trip to Egypt last month as the pope demanded the country's imams teach their young to reject the use of violence in God's name and backed an Egyptian government crackdown on Islamic militants who have increasingly targeted the country's Christian community.
Asked by reporters there how his meeting with the pope went, Trump responded, "Great". During the presidential campaign, the Pope called out then candidate-Trump, saying anyone who concentrates more on building walls than bridges was not a Christian. So far he's met with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Kuwait and Israel.
Because of the pope's weekly general audience, Pope Francis and Trump met at 8:30 a.m., an unusually early hour for a formal papal meeting.
