Alonso: First lap off didn't cost McLaren points

"It's clear that in 2017 he's not going to win any championships here, so he's thinking about where he can win races in 2018".

McLaren-Honda F1 driver and two-time series champion Fernando Alonso says he has no regrets about sitting out the forthcoming Monaco Grand Prix.

"Everything today went ideal - better than what we thought", said Alonso, who'd not qualified as high since last year's Hungarian Grand Prix.

That could mean extending his contract with McLaren-Honda - now nearing the end of its purported three-year term - but only if the partnership begins to bear fruit.

Alonso's MCL32 vehicle broke down at just the second corner.

Alonso qualified a solid seventh in Barcelona before fading and finishing out of the points in 12th place and two laps down from the leaders.

"I think I have a lower percentage [chance of winning] than some of my opponents do", said Alonso in Barcelona.

It's the first time that I've had a Friday this season without any big problems - we ran through our programme without any big issues, so that was good.

Fernando Alonso said on Thursday he will get to keep the Indianapolis 500 vehicle that he races in later this month to add to his musem collection.

Allegri: Loss a wake-up call for Juve
Nainggolan in particular caught the eye of the scouts by scoring an excellent goal that took the game away from Juventus . You just have to remember we were up against the second team in the competition.

However, Brown said: "I don't think it will be a particular race".

The latest blow comes a day after Alonso issued an ultimatum: Either McLaren gives him a competitive auto by October or he will look to change teams or consider leaving F1.

Ferrari pair Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel were third and fourth, about a second slower than Hamilton.

With Sauber scoring points, courtesy of eighth for Pascal Wehrlein, McLaren is the only team yet to register a top 10 finish this season.

After showing some progress with its Honda engine a year ago, the team has taken a huge step back with neither Alonso nor new teammate Stoffel Vandoorne yet to score a point. Both times were faster than Hamilton's quickest lap from Friday.

Mercedes said that after it fixed an electrical problem in the power unit of Bottas' vehicle, the team was forced to change the engine altogether due to a water leak. "It was tricky for us", Hamilton said.

"My intention, and my first priority, is to race here (F1) next year, but not just to race..."

Qualifying is later for Sunday's race.
