China says it tested new missile in north-eastern Bohai Sea

In 2015, China for the first time demonstrated a whole range of long, medium and short range missiles during a military parade.

At a regular news briefing last month, China's defence ministry responded to questions about the Thaad deployment by foreshadowing the weapons tests, saying they were necessary to safeguard its national security.

The installation of the US-developed THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) missile defense system in South Korea has drawn regional condemnation not only from North Korea, but from China and Russian Federation as well, who object to the system's range and powerful radar.

Amid reports that the U.S. and North Korea were engaging in informal talks in Norway, China said today that it wants a peaceful resolution of the Korean peninsula nuclear issue through dialogue.

"The test achieved the expected result", said the statement, without disclosing the exact date.

China also said its troops carried out exercises close the North Korean border as US President Donald Trump stepped up pressure on the North Korean leader Kim-Jong-un to scale back the nuclear and missile programme.

Of course, left unsaid was China's support of its North Korean allies, who above all do not want to see anti-missile defenses in South Korea.

The system became operational last week, prompting immediate calls by Beijing to suspend its deployment.

In simple terms, China is anxious that US's radar system would be able to potentially detect Chinese missiles better, in the event of a future war.

On Wednesday China's military did not provide details on the missile.

China has over the years tried to coax North Korea into cautious, export-oriented economic reforms, rather than sabre rattling and nuclear tests, but to little avail.

Beijing and Pyongyang have a relationship forged in the blood of the Korean War, and the Asian giant remains its wayward neighbour's main provider of aid and trade. It said that Beijing is believed to have delivered the proposition to Pyongyang.
