The NewsX -MRC poll gave the BJP 185 seats, the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance 120 and the Bahujan Samaj Party 90.The Times Now-VMR poll gave the BJP between 190 and 210 seats, the SP-Congress combine between 110 and 130 seats and the BSP between 57 and 74 seats. At the BJP's Delhi headquarters, party chief Amit Shah celebrated with jubilant party workers and credited the BJP's victory to PM Modi's leadership, describing him as "the most popular leader since Independence". It seems that demonetisation has worked in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party and not against it.

For the impact of BJP's win on Indian equity market, CEO & Chief Portfolio Manager at Prabhudas Lilladher Pvt Ltd Ajay Bodke said "equity market would be rejoiced with this outcome and scale a new high ably supported by a torrent of domestic liquidity".

Senior BJP leader and Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the party "has reached new heights in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh and changed the political picture of the country". Her allegation is unlikely to be taken seriously.

The states' election results are set to be declared tomorrow.

After five hours of counting of votes in the elections held in the five states in February-March, BJP won or led in 309 seats in UP. With significant number of seats from Manipur in its bag, the saffron party is now eyeing Meghalaya and Mizoram with vows of development in the region. Exit polls have predicted victory for BJP in Uttarakhand. Unlike the lower house, whose members are elected by direct vote, the upper house is elected by state assemblies. But its staggering demographic weight makes it the most politically consequential state in India's democracy.

BJP state chief for UP Keshav Prasad Maurya said results are a win for progress. "The only factor for the win is the performance of the Modi government", he said.
