The 30-year-old Nadal, who reached his first Grand Slam final in almost three years at January's Australian Open, was looking to win his first hard-court title since January 2014, when he took the trophy at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open. "I hope I can have more like this", Querrey said.

With games at 6-5 and on serve in the third set, Querrey then broke the Kyrgios serve to triumph 3-6 6-1 7-5.

He's the first American champion in the history of the event.

The 21-year-old Australian beat Nadal in Wimbledon (2014) and Federer in Madrid (2015).

A delighted Krygios said that he doesn't change his game when he meets top players.

The American had a great week beating favored players on the road to the championship. "The ball bounces right into my strike zone on these courts, so I'm very comfortable playing here".

Querrey had 19 aces to win his ninth career title.
