- Since he took over the job as the Bills head coach, Rex Ryan has kept his focus exclusively on the defensive side of the ball, and over the course of the spring, summer, and early fall, trying to fix the defense after their performance in 2015.
Ryan is nearly surely coaching for his job at this point; while the Bills have suffered injuries and suspensions, the team nonetheless has the talent to make a feasible run at a wild-card berth. So, naturally, on Friday, the team fired offensive coordinator Greg Roman.
Ryan steadfastly claims the decision was his alone, but it is known that team owners Terry and Kim Pegula met with several players in private meetings.
"I'm more of an observer, and if they ask questions I'll give a defensive perspective, but that's pretty much it", said Ryan, killing the thought that he'll be more involved in play-calling. "I'm not going to say that we played lights out Week 1, but we played okay, we did some good things". "I made the decision on letting Greg Roman go". "That happens all the time", Ryan said.
Ryan said he considers it a positive that the Pegulas get involved, and added they don't need his permission to speak to anyone because they own the team.
"I'M VERY aware of some of those reports out there", Ryan admitted.
"I feel like when I read media reports it feels like a lot more crisis than we feel within the building". The 2016 has been no exception with the Bills starting the season 0-2, and has been lacking strong play on both sides of the ball. But, the Bills need him this weekend - a healthy him, that is.
'Black mark' for Australia exchange as glitch halts trading for the day
I continue to trade a $US0.7560 to $US0.7450 range, but am happy to take direction on a break either side of this range. ASX was forced to suspend the market again less than three hours later, before closing it for the rest of the day.
There were a couple big plays in the 37-31 loss to the Jets in the form of 71- and 84-yard touchdown passes, but the Bills know they can't rely on that happening every week. The Bills have a crucial contest with the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, and are getting prepared to try and do anything in their power to avoid an 0-3 start to the season.
Despite the presence of playmakers such as McCoy and Sammy Watkins, the Bills rank 30th in the league in offense through two games (276.5 yards per game). Both have been National Football League offensive coordinators in the past (Palmer was also head coach of the Browns) and Ryan said they will be invaluable to Lynn (who has never been a coordinator) as he makes this transition.
From a philosophical standpoint, Lynn wants to go faster on offense. Either way, the team moves on with Anthony Lynn as the new coordinator. Fitzgerald has been the Cardinals' main receiver with 14 receptions on 21 targets for 162 yards and three touchdowns. Lead Bills RB LeSean McCoy couldn't find much running room, bagging just 59 rush yards on 15 carries.
One of Lynn's biggest objectives this week versus Arizona is to establish Watkins as a threat again.
The Bills are going to have a much-needed long break before they continue play next Sunday - September 25th vs. the Arizona Cardinals. However, USA Today reported that many players were not exactly displeased that Roman was gone.
"We've had open communication since Day One", Taylor said.
