GUAM - Two of five fire scenes now under investigation on Guam are on the same block in Hagatna and occurred just a day apart. Last week Thursday (January 28) firefighters were hosing down an abandoned home between the Bahai Faith Center and the Chode commercial building near Julale Center. But the day before, a blaze further damaged a structure of distinct historical significance. It's an unassuming abandoned house on a corner lot in Hagatna that caught fire for the fourth time. But what many don't know is that it's the childhood home of Guam's first Archbishop -- Felixberto C. Flores. After suffering a series of damaging fires, what's suspected of being Ifit wood timbers are now charred to a crisp, further compromising the skeletal framework of the home. At his passing, the late Archbishop deeded the property to the Archdiocese. And the Guam Historic Preservation Trust is seeking to have it designated an historic site -- and restored to its original condition. Yet, for Monsignor James Benavente, the building represents much more. Benavente says if the building is not designated an historic site, the Archdiocese will use the property to expand Guma San Francisco to provide more services to the homeless. But for now the childhood home of Guam's first Archbishop sits gutted, burned and abandoned. The home sits in an historically significant block of Hagatna near Julale Center. Just around the corner on Padre Palomo Street? Pakito's place. And the 1911 Lujan Home, now under renovation by the Preservation Trust. Until more of Guam's historical buildings can be properly restored and maintained, they will continue to be exposed to the elements, undue mishap, or, worse, arson.
