Progress On The Wharf Front
By John Dela Rosa GUAM - Island dignitaries gathered today at the Port Authority of Guam to celebrate the completion of a project that will help ensure that the flow of goods into our community remains uninterrupted. "This is just one of many projects that our people will see moving forward as we continue our efforts to transform the Port Authority of Guam into a world-class facility," General Manager Glenn A. Leon Guerrero told the NewsFactor. The ribbon cutting ceremony was held this morning for the completion of the wharf upgrades and the gantry crane rail replacement projects. The entire work cost $4 million and was completed by Black Construction Company. These are the first upgrades to the wharf in nearly 20 years. The event also marks the first time the rail system for the gantry cranes, which was built nearly 40 years ago, has ever been replaced. "These are exciting times at the port and we really look forward to launching all of the remaining construction projects that are a part of our Modernization Program," Leon Guerrero said. Governor Felix P. Camacho was the keynote speaker today and told the audience he is proud of the work being done by the port authority. He added that the board of directors has been instrumental in bringing together private sector partners to help move the port forward. Today's ribbon cutting is a part of the Modernization Program which was launched last year following the approval of the port's updated master plan. The Modernization Program calls for more than $200 Million in upgrades to the facility. The port is currently awaiting word from the federal government on whether their applications for $100 Million in loans and grants have been approved. Once that approval is granted, the first phase of the Modernization Program will be launched.
